Why did Chevy have the genius idea to offer an appearance package on the Cobalt and call something like "SS Appearance Package" and have it slap on SS badges on a standard Cobalt?

Most of the "SS's" that come up when I search Craigslist are that stupid appearance package and not the real deal.

I guess the only proper way to tell the difference is the huge spoiler they put on the real SS.

The high rise is the SS SC and Turbo Only, but on top of that you can see the SC and Turbo with a low rise and the no wing option, the biggest tell is the wheels, the SC came with 18s and the appearance package came with 17s, but the SS NA got a 2.4 not a 2.2

Look for an SC with the G85 package if you can, if the owner isn't sure look at the RPO in the glove box or look at the seats, if they're recaros it has an LSD as well.

Don't tell the owner that they have the G85 because that makes them a bit more valuable....

So apparently up thru 2007, there was an SS, and SS Supercharged.

Starting in 2008, there was just SS, which is the turbo.

Assuming you're looking for a turbo (it's rather better than the supercharged one, right?) then in theory you should be able to limit your search to '08 or newer and not have to deal with the "SS" badges-n-spoilers but actually base model nonsense.

They never did an SS appearance, they had an NA SS. They did offer a sport package on most of their cars though. We had it on our Impala. It looked like an SS, but wasn't.

I'm actually looking at supercharged ones because they're cheaper and there's only one turbocharged one for sale locally and it's riced out.

Yep. I can assure you, the Cobalt community isn't fans either of the SS/NAs running around thinking they are sooo cool.

Your best bets, this late in the game is wheel size and interiors. Most everything else has been swapped around to other models. Like me with my low-rise spoiler.

You're looking for 5 lug 18" wheels. There were a few different versions, ranging from gunmetal to polished, over the span of the years. Black interior pieces (glovebox, door panels, etc. The pillars will still be tan though.) If you see red/yellow/blue and black seats and interiors, that means the car most likely won't have the LSD trans unless one was put in after the fact. You want to see Recaro seats (unless it's an 07, towards the end of the year they stopped coming with them) Don't take seeing Recaros as a sign the car has the LSD, since they bolt right into the other models. Above all else, check the trunk for the tag for G85.

That's the biggest appearance stuff off the top of my head. Feel free to send me any cars you're looking at. I've had mine since 07 so have a pretty good grasp of what is good or not.
